Peer Talk Interviews: Mayor Willie L. Brown Jr.


Willie L. Brown Jr. ran for the California State Assembly in 1962 and lost and he ran again in 1964 and won. he served as a California State Assemblyman for over 30 years and was the Speaker of the California State Assembly for 15 years the longest running Speaker of the House. in the History of California In 1994 Willie Brown ran for Mayor of San Francisco and won he served two terms.

To date Mayor Brown is considered to be one of the most influential, and powerful politicians in California and Nationally . Mayor Brown came from Texas at a time of Jim Crow Laws when African American’s went to separate schools and lived in a separate part of the town, the Jim Crow Laws were in full effect. Mayor Brown moved from Texas to San Francisco when he was 17 years old. After being excepted to San Francisco State his road to politics began.
